Welcome to BackPacker.org.uk, a new free web site aimed at the modern backpacker. BackPacker.org.uk aims to bring together like minded individuals who are interested in journeying to genuinely far flung and unusual corners of the globe. The site also aims to explore the evolution of independent travel throughout history (especially during the last three or four decades). It aims to try and explore important ethical and social questions surrounding the contemporary phenomena that is “backpacking”. It will also look back to the perceived “Golden Age” of this type of travel, the 60s and 70s - a time before rampant commercialisation had compromised some of the integrity of the intrepid traveler. Backpacker.org.uk will try and ask what we can learn from that period-before iPods, the Internet and mass-produced guide books. A time when backpackers went off seemingly with little knowledge of what lay in store for them. It is the aim of this site to bring some of that pioneering spirit into the twenty first century. To rehabilitate the somewhat tarnished reputation of “independent travel”. It aims to explore the very nature of the terms “travel” and “backpacker”. It aspires to inspire the overlooked legions of genuine “vagabonds”. To instill in them the confidence to follow their dreams away from the tourist hordes. So that they can enrich the societies they visit as much as those societies enrich them. How this site develops is in large part in the hands of those who choose to use it. |
